The Instituto Zuzu Angel de Moda do Rio de Janeiro, a civil not-for-profit entity , was founded in October of 1993 stemming from an idea by journalist Hildegard Angel, the daughter of the fashion designer who gives the name to this institution.

Many achievements have been made in these 12 years and some of them are:
 

  • Creating and preserving at out institution one of the largest fashion collections in the country, showcasing the work of the most important Brazilian and international designers.

  • Hosting the I Brazilian Fashion Conference, attended by Hubert de Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Philipe Venet, Miss Eleanor Lambert and Annet de Goldstein.

  • Signing international agreements for the exchange of students with ESMOD – École Supérieure de Mode – France and the Université de La Mode de Lyon.

  • Creating the Brazilian Fashion Academy, one of the branches of the Instituto, to congregate and preserve the leading names of fashion design in Brazil.

  • Organizing the following Exhibits: “Tribute to Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis”, at Palácio da Cidade, Palácio do Itamaraty and the Museum of Modern Art of Salvador, Bahia; “Christian Dior – 50 years”, at Centro Cultural Veiga de Almeida; “Zuzu Angel – The Power of an Angel”, at the National Museum of Fine Arts , “Carmen Solbialti Mayrink Veiga’s Collection of Haute Couture”, at Casa de Arte e Cultura Julieta de Serpa and “Zuzu Angel – I am the Brazilian fashion”, at the National Museum of History.

  • Introduction to style to working uniforms for the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Cia. Siderúrgica Nacional – CSN., Lafarge do Brasil and Hotel Portinari in Rio de Janeiro.

  • Institutional support to several samba schools such as : “Em Cima da Hora”, “União da Ilha do Governador”, “Unidos da Tijuca”, “Portela” and “Imperatriz Leopoldinense”.

  • The I Higher Course in Fashion in the State of Rio de Janeiro, a successful partnership between Instituto Zuzu Angel and Universidade Veiga de Almeida, accredited by the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture, with more than 700 students enrolled. Considered by specialized publications as one of the best fashion courses in the country. Today several fashion designers who graduated from our program are offspring from Zuzu Angel’s avant-guarde and pioneer fashion, lending their talent to important national and international griffes.

  • In cooperation with Universidade Veiga de Almeida, the Instituto Zuzu Angel launched the I MBA in Fashion Production - Stylist, another pioneer initiative in full operation and in its 4th graduation class.

  • With the help of Anglo Gold Ashanti, AJORIO and Jóia Brasil, we opened the MBA in Jewelry Making and the Higher Course in Jewel Design Technology IZA/UVA.

  • In cooperation with SEBRAE-RJ we organized the “I Seminar of Preservation of Identity – Fashion, Jewelry, Crafts and Carnival in Contemporary Brazil”.

  • Supervision of Screenwriting, Curatorship of Fashion Models and coordination of events releasing the movie “Zuzu Angel” , directed by Sérgio Resende, co-produced by Joaquim Vaz de Carvalho and the Warner Brothers Corporation.

  • Recently the Board of Directors of the Instituto Zuzu Angel, considering that the goals of its partnership with Universidade Veiga de Almeida have been fully met, decided to take bolder steps and recently signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with a Universidade Estácio de Sá – the largest private university in Brazil – and in the second semester will be launching a project both nationally and internationally covering : Higher academic training in the Design of Fashion, Jewelry and Carnival in all its segments; a Fashion Integrated Center with state-of-the-art technologies; a Center of Inclusion of the Fashion Professional to the job market ; a Consulting Center to help all niches of the fashion market. An Incentive Program for the Development of Fashion with be launched, including events and permanent actions to promote the fashion market as a whole and the fashion professionals.

 

The Instituto Zuzu Angel de Moda da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro with its achievements has become a reference and a place for debate and exchange of ideas about the Brazilian fashion in its various expressions.
